Beschreibung: The German troops are about to take over Verdun. The alarm is raised. The French soldier is quietly waiting for the assault. People are evacuated. The wife is torn away from her husband who stays to defend the land, the same land that the peasant refuses to leave. The German offensive begins on the 21st of February 1916. The Germans strike on the woods of Caures after ten hours of bombing. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the signing of the 1918 Armistice, Léon Poirier recreates the Battle of Verdun, depicting the fate of symbolic figures from both sides of the conflict. Divided into three parts (“La Force”, “l’Enfer” and “le Destin”), Verdun, visions d’Histoire is an epic film with a strong emotional impact, dedicated to « all the martyrs of the most terrible human passions… war”. Until 2006, Verdun, visions d’Histoire, only existed in a cut down, poor quality print. Thanks to its privileged links with Moscow’s Gosfilmofond and with the help of the film’s rights-holder, the Toulouse Cinémathèque managed to obtain access to an excellently preserved copy. The institution, founded by Raymond Borde in1964, had gathered all the elements to enable the restoration of a major work in the history of cinema. The Toulouse Cinémathèque was founded in 1964 by passionate film fans gathered around Raymond Borde. A member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) since 1965 and currently managed by Martine Offroy, the Toulouse Cinémathèque is one of the 3 most important French film archives and the second biggest film archive in France. It is supported by the CNC (National Film Centre), the City of Toulouse, General and Regional Councils. It preserves 41 000 copies, 70 000 film posters (the most important film poster collection in France), 500 000 photographs, 71 000 pressbooks, 14 000 publications and has always carried out film preservation and promotion policies. Sharing the film heritage with as large a public as possible is one of the main goals of the Zoom Arrière film festival, created in 2007 by the Toulouse Cinémathèque.
